Hever Castle Attractions
Hever Castle has a wealth of attractions and Tudor artefacts to enjoy. Here are just a few of them:-
- Anne Boleyn’s Books of Hours - Hever has two of Anne Boleyn’s prayer books, known as Books of Hours. The first was made in Bruges between 1410 and 1450 and is the earliest example of a book known to have been owned by Anne Boleyn. It contains her signature, signatures of members if the Tudor vourt and an inscription written by Anne: “Let temps viendra” meaning “the time will come” along with “Je anne Boleyn”.
The second Book of Hours was printed in Paris in around 1528 and bears an inscription written by Anne: “remember me when you do pray, that hope doth lead from day to day anne Boleyn”. - Tudor portraits - David Starkey says of Hever: “Hever Castle, once the home of that great figure in Tudor history, Anne Boleyn, now has one of the best collections of Tudor portraits after the National Portrait Gallery.” See portraits of Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Prince Arthur, Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, Catherine Parr, Elizabeth I, Robert Cecil and Mary Boleyn.
- Armour, instruments of execution, discipline and torture - A collection of instruments from all over Europe which relate to torture and execution.
- Antique furniture and relics - Including the Henry VIII lock (a gilt door lock that belonged to the King), tapestries, armour, tables, chests, beds and a marriage plaque showing the coats of arms of the Boleyns/Howards, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
- Gardens - Hever Castle has won awards for its beautiful gardens which have also been used as film sets. Among the gardens you will find the Rose Garden, the formal Loggia Fountain, the Tudor Garden, Herb Garden, Anne Boleyn’s Walk, the Rhododendron Walk, Anne Boleyn’s Orchard, the Pompeiian Wall, Sunken Garden, Italian Garden and much more.
- Yew Maze - Mazes are a Renaissance tradition and you can enjoy getting lost in this maze of 80 feet by 80 feet.
- Hever Lake Walk - This hour long walk round the lake will allow you to enjoy the spectacular scenery and see birds like kingfishers, swans, crested grebes, woodpeckers and herons.
- Splashing Water Maze - This maze is made from a series of concentric stepping stone walkways with hidden water jets which may take you by surprise. Can you reach the central stone grotto without getting wet?
- Hever Castle 18 hole Golf Course - The golf course is a championship course with driving range, practice facility, shop, bar and restaurant. There is also a 9 hole course. Hever Golf Club are holding 2009 prices for guests staying at the Castle for The Anne Boleyn Experience 2010.
